It's time to go back to music class as I have another memory from the same music class (possibly from the same year).
I know little about this song. My limited research suggests this is an old folk song and it was commonplace in elementary school music classes. What I do know it that it's creepy as hell! This song scared me when I was a kid. I am haunted by the memory of this being sung in class - piano resonating and children howling. The atmosphere was unsettling for a young boy. The music textbook which had the lyrics also had a creepy picture of the titular John, possibly without his skin. I'd search the internet for this possible lost media songbook, but I don't want to know what gruesome things I might see in the search.
