PaseoBaggage - Blaugust 2026

One for Father - #12 Blaugust 2026

Yesterday I mentioned a song my dad introduced me to, but how about I song I introduced my dad to?

Mexican Wine by Fountains of Wayne

The first part of this story is that my parents didn't really like buying music. We didn't really own any CDs growing up and I already mentioned my dad's cassette tapes. There really wasn't any reason detailed for this, but I assumed they saw music as a kind of fad and they didn't want to spend money on something we would get tired of. It'd be a waste of money after all.

In high school I had a friend who would burn me CDs. I would throw him a couple bucks to cover the discs and I usually gave him a list of songs I wanted to he could get them off Limewire or something. "Stacy's Mom" was a popular song at the time and my friend actually had the full CD "Welcome Interstate Managers" and gave me a copy. It's a great album in my opinion.

I don't remember purposely introducing my father to it, but he likely heard me playing the album all the time and liked what he heard. I'd say it's my dad's favorite album and as far as I know he still listens to it all the time. It's something we've bonded over. We love every song on the album. It's been played around the house and in the car. My dad made sure I brought it for a family vacation.

Strangely enough, I don't recall my dad ever asking where I got it from. Maybe he didn't care or maybe he just turned a blind eye to it.
