Shiny Shiny - #2 Blaugust 2026

In yesterday's post I mentioned my father had a bunch of cassette tapes of songs he recorded off the radio. There was a good deal of 80s music among those tapes. Take On Me, 867-5309, and Spirits in the Material World are the notable entries I remember, but there was another song that was popular with my young self that many had not heard of.

Shiny Shiny by Haysi Fantayzee

The big question on my mind is: Why? It's a very eclectic song with a guitar riff, clacking spoons, and repetitive fiddle in the chorus. I just listened to it again now and it was kind of hard to sit through. It's a byproduct of another time so maybe my 2026 adult brain can't comprehend what makes it appealing.

The memory here was a drive to church one Sunday morning when I think we played this song again and again for the whole ride (or at least a few times over). My dad had to rewind the cassette for each time my brothers and I asked him to play it again. A welcome treat for us who normally have no choice to what gets played in the car. I don't want to say I'm nostalgic for the song, but I would give it a special status for being a notable one from my past.

I'm also fine not hearing again for a while.
